Advantages and disadvantages of PC, acrylic and PS, how to choose?
PS, PC and acrylic are new materials commonly used in life, widely used in electronic appliances, building materials, automobile industry, interior decoration, medical equipment and other fields, so what are the advantages and disadvantages between them? How to choose?
PS board
PS is a plastic material. Its material is polystyrene, and its density is between 1.02 and 1.08. It is a thermoplastic plastic, and its transparency is only slightly lower than that of plexiglass. The price will be lower than that of plexiglass, and the use effect will not be much different.
Advantages:
Excellent electrical insulation (especially high-frequency insulation), colorless and transparent, light transmittance is second only to plexiglass, coloring and water resistance, and good chemical stability. Widely used in the optical industry, the main reason is that it has high light transmittance, and can be used to manufacture optical glass and optical instruments.
Disadvantages:
The strength is average, but it is brittle, prone to stress brittle cracking, not resistant to organic solvents such as benzene and gasoline, and will decompose when it encounters water. It is suitable for making insulating transparent parts, decorative parts and chemical instruments, optical instruments and other parts.
Acrylic (PMMA)
Acrylic, also known as specially treated organic glass, is a replacement product for organic glass. It is a chemical material with the chemical name "PMMA" belonging to the polyacrylate class. Light boxes made of acrylic have the characteristics of good light transmission, pure color, rich colors, beautiful and flat, taking into account both day and night effects, long service life, and no impact on use.
PC board, also known as polycarbonate board, polyester board, and Capron board, is mainly composed of polycarbonate. It is a high-tech, extremely excellent comprehensive performance, energy-saving and environmentally friendly plastic sheet. It is a plastic building material commonly used internationally and has advantages that other building decoration materials (such as glass, organic glass, etc.) cannot match.
Advantages:
Good light transmittance, PC board light transmittance can reach 89%, which is comparable to glass. The UV coating contained will not produce yellowing, fogging, poor light transmittance, etc. under sunlight exposure
Strong impact resistance, 250-300 times that of ordinary glass, 30 times that of acrylic board of the same thickness, and 2-20 times that of tempered glass. It has no cracks even if it falls from less than two meters with a 3kg hammer. It is known as "unbreakable glass" and "ringing steel".
Anti-ultraviolet, the surface of polyester board is coated with an anti-ultraviolet (UV) coating, which can effectively block ultraviolet rays from passing through
Lightweight, only half the weight of ordinary glass
Flame retardant, national standard GB50222-95 confirms that PC board is flame-retardant level 1, that is, B1 level. Its own ignition point is 580 degrees Celsius. It will extinguish itself after leaving the fire. It will not produce toxic gases when burning and will not promote the spread of fire. After special treatment, the flame retardant level can reach V0 level
Sound insulation: PC board has obvious sound insulation effect and has better sound insulation than glass and acrylic board of the same thickness. Under the condition of the same thickness, the sound insulation of PC board is 3-4DB higher than that of glass. It is the preferred material for highway noise barriers internationally
It has good processing performance and can be processed into various shapes desired by the factory
Disadvantages:
PC sheets are not resistant to strong acids and alkalis
Compared with metal sheets, the surface wear resistance is poor and can be hardened
The price is more expensive than plexiglass
In general, PS, PC, and acrylic each have their own advantages and disadvantages. If they focus on safety protection, impact resistance and UV resistance, PC is preferred; if high transparency is required but hardness is not so demanding, acrylic can be used; if the overall requirements are not high and there is no water and organic solvent environment, PS materials can be used.
